Behind the Scenes on Baseline Athlete Day

Behind the Scenes on Baseline Athlete Day
ProjectMay 11, 20265 min read
Some things take months of planning. And then the day finally arrives and it all comes together faster than you expected.

In the last week of April we hosted the very first Baseline Athlete Day. Six athletes, one location, a full day of interviews, studio shoots, lifestyle content and workouts. It was a big day for us as a brand. And honestly, one of the most energizing days we have had since starting Baseline Pro.

We want to take you behind the scenes on how the day came together, what we captured, and what it felt like to finally bring this group into the same room.

How We Got Here

Over the past few months, we have been quietly building something we feel strongly about. We brought on six athletes as Baseline partners. Not in the traditional influencer sense, where a brand sends products and asks for posts. These athletes are involved in the brand on a different level. They give us real feedback on gear, they are part of conversations about where Baseline is heading, and their input actually shapes decisions.

We wanted partners who train seriously, who are honest about their sport, and who represent what Baseline aims to achieve and motivate in the sport of functional fitness.

The partnerships have been building in the background for a while now. The Athlete Day was the first moment we brought everyone together in person, and the first step toward introducing them to you properly.

The Prep Behind Athlete Day

Getting a day like this right takes more logistics than most people realise.

Coordinating six athletes, three photographers, a videographer and interview setup in one location requires everyone to be in the right place at the right time. We mapped out the schedule in detail beforehand, but we also kept enough flexibility in it to let things breathe. Shoots that feel rushed never produce the best content.

We set up two separate areas running simultaneously. One was a studio setup for headshots. Clean backdrop, controlled lighting, focused portraits. These will become the official announcement images when we introduce each athlete to our community in the coming weeks. The other area was for lifestyle shooting, a more relaxed, movement-based setup that gave the photographers room to work naturally.

While some athletes were in front of the cameras, others were sitting down for their one-on-one interviews. These were not scripted. We wanted real answers, natural conversation, and moments where their personality actually came through. No autocue, no rehearsals.

The Interviews: Getting to Know the People Behind the Athletes

The interviews were probably the part we were most excited about going into the day.

There is always a version of an athlete you see in competition footage or on their social media. But that version is edited down to highlights and results. We wanted to go deeper than that. What drives them, what their training actually looks like week to week, what they have had to overcome, what they love about CrossFit beyond the podiums.

Every athlete brought something different to the conversation. Some were immediately open and expressive. Others took a few minutes to settle in before they started talking in a way that felt real. That is completely normal, and the interviews were better for having that warm-up time built in.

The footage is being edited into individual athlete videos. When we announce each partner over the coming weeks, these videos will be part of how we introduce them. We think they give a side of each person that a headshot or a competition result cannot.

Part Two: The Workouts

After the shoots and interviews, the day shifted into the part every athlete was probably most comfortable with: Training.

Three workout were provided by Improvement Training. The goal was not to test anyone or prove anything. It was to get the group moving together, have a good time, and capture some real training content in the process. Nothing feels more forced than athletes posing for action shots. So we let them work, and the cameras followed.

There was a clear shift in energy once the barbells came out. The competitiveness that had been sitting quietly in the background started showing up. Six CrossFit athletes in the same space doing the same workout, even purely for fun, will always bring up the competitive side.

That is what makes this community what it is.

The video and photo content from the workouts will be used across our website, socials and in future blog posts. It is some of the best content we have shot as a brand so far, and it only happened because the athletes were genuinely going for it.

The Reactions

We asked a few of the athletes for their thoughts at the end of the day.

The word that came up most was energy. The group dynamic surprised a few of them. Some had crossed paths at competitions before, others were meeting for the first time. By the end of three workouts and a full day together, it felt like a group that had known each other longer than that.

A few mentioned how different it felt compared to their experiences with other brands. Less transactional, more like actually being part of something. That is exactly what we were going for.

What Comes Next

The official athlete announcements are coming in the next few weeks. Each athlete will get their own moment, their own post, and their own story told properly.

We will be sharing the interview videos, the headshots, and a deeper look at each person through individual Journal posts. You will get to know who they are, how they train, and why we chose to build something with them specifically.

We are proud of this group. And we think once you meet them, you will understand why.

Stay tuned.
